Constructing
& Establishing Corporate
Core Values
~ The Building
Blocks of Company Culture ~
|
FOREWORD
Core ideology defines the enduring character of
an organization—a consistent identity that transcends product or market life
cycles, technological breakthroughs, management fads, and individual leaders.
In fact, the most lasting and significant contribution of those who build
visionary companies is the core ideology.
Why do companies like Google, Zappos.com, Whole
Foods Market (just to name a few) always top the lists of the best companies
to work with? It is definitely not just because of their competitive
compensation packages, or an emphasis on open communication and teamwork, or
the way their leadership strives to ensure each and every employee know they
are indispensable to the company’s overall success. The answer is that it’s
all of that … and much more.
Company builders such as David
Packard, Masaru Ibuka of Sony, George Merck of Merck, William McKnight of 3M,
and Paul Galvin of Motorola understood that it is more important to know who
you are than where you are going, for where you are going will change as the
world around you changes. Leaders die, products become obsolete, markets
change, new technologies emerge, and management fads come and go, but core
ideology in a great company endures as a source of guidance and inspiration.

Culture Begins with Core Values
What
truly defines a company culture, ultimately is the collective behavior of the
people in the organization. The driving force behind that behavior is the
basic building block of a company’s culture – its core values.
Core values are personal, ethical, and ideological guidelines that set the
standard for every aspect of business operations, from hiring to decision
making to strategic planning. Core values
are what support the vision, shape the culture and reflect what the company
values. They are the essence of the company’s identity – the principles,
beliefs or philosophy of values. Many companies focus mostly on the technical
competencies but often forget what are the underlying competencies that make
their companies run smoothly — core values. Establishing strong core values
provides both internal and external advantages to the company.
